We therefore thought we would do our bit and keep the holiday going and open it up to all homebuyers.”

HRH The Princess Royal will be a guest of honour at a special ceremony to mark the centenary of Plymouth-born Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s iconic and ill-fated expedition to the South Pole.

The Princess will join family members and descendants of the Terra Nova Expedition team, as well as key figures in the Plymouth community, to lay wreaths at the rededication of the National Scott Memorial at Mount Wise on Friday 23rd March.

The ceremony is being organised by Plymouth University, the Plymouth Scott 100 Committee and Mount Wise Devon Ltd. The rededication service will be conducted by the Bishop of Plymouth, the Rt Revd John Ford and will be attended by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Devon Mr Eric Dancer CBE, the Lord Mayor of Plymouth and the Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth University.

The Princess Royal will go on to visit Admiralty House, where she will view several exhibitions devoted to Scott, including memorabilia from Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery. Schoolchildren from a number of schools and colleges in Plymouth will then perform excerpts from a new musical Great Scott, by Australian composer David Jensen.

HRH will also be introduced to several descendants of the Plymouth men who sailed with Captain Scott, and be presented with a copy of the Plymouth Anthology of work by local schoolchildren; and a posy by three year old Chloe Jones, a descendant of Plymothian Francis Davies, Shipwright on the Terra Nova.

Professor Wendy Purcell said: “The City of Plymouth is defined by a spirit of discovery and boldness – and Captain Scott and his crew are the very personification of that ethos. They have helped to shape the heritage of Plymouth, just as the University is taking up the mantle in the present through its world-class research and teaching.

“The rededication ceremony will be an opportunity to reflect and pay tribute to the bravery and endeavour of Scott and his men.”

Scott was born and educated in Plymouth, and led the 1910 -1912 British Antarctic Expedition to Antarctica. The team bravely walked across 900 miles of snow and ice to the South Pole, reaching their destination on 17 January 1912. But tragedy struck during their return journey, when, having run out of food, they perished in the extreme cold, in a blizzard, on or about 29th March 1912.

The National Scott Memorial, which features bronze portrait medallions of Captain Scott RN and the other members of the South Pole party (Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers RIM and Petty Officer Edgar Evans RN) was unveiled in 1925. A short passage from Scott’s final diary entry is laid out on the ground around the monument.

Dr David Wilson, Co-ordinator of the national Scott 100 events, said: “The Mount Wise national monument to Captain Scott and the Pole Party has honoured one of Plymouth’s greatest sons for many years and reflects the remarkable courage and heroism with which they met their end a century ago.

“That we will all stand here to rededicate this monument is a testament to the lasting legacy of exploration, scientific study and cultural inspiration which Scott and his team left to us, and which has had considerable influence on the course of the twentieth century. All the expedition descendants are very proud that HRH the Princess Royal is leading us in this remembrance and hope that it will allow everyone to find fresh inspiration for their own lives in the story of Captain Scott and his Antarctic expeditions.”

Angus Macdonald, development advisor at Mount Wise, commented: “We are delighted to be involved in this rededication ceremony. To have a member of the Royal family leading this remembrance is testament to the importance and bravery of this great explorer.

“Although Admiralty House has seen a number of royals pass through its doors, this will be the first time since its new chapter of development commenced. It will be an honour to welcome HRH the Princess Royal to Mount Wise.”

Each four bedroom house in Phase One boasts a Georgian-inspired design with high ceilings, large sash double-glazed windows and an elegant limestone fireplace in the living room. We therefore wanted to offer a package which simplifies the buying and selling process.

“We have limited the package to the first five applicants and, as we are expecting it to be popular, we would advise those interested to get in touch with our sales team as soon as possible.”

There has been high interest in the government-backed FirstBuy scheme and Mount Wise has a number of properties available through the initiative.

15 homes in the development’s first phase have been allocated to offer the equity loan scheme across a mix of one, two and three bedroom houses and apartments.

FirstBuy is an equity loan scheme which will see the government and the developer (Mount Wise) provide purchasers with a loan of up to 20% of the price of a new home. Purchasers will therefore only be required to put forward a 5% deposit to own 100% of a new property.*

Mount Wise is one of Plymouth’s most popular developments offering a village ideal in a waterside setting, just minutes from the city centre.

Angus Macdonald, development advisor at Mount Wise, explains this new offering: “FirstBuy is a fantastic scheme which provides eligible buyers who are struggling with a deposit to buy a brand new home. Although focused on first time buyers, it can also apply to others who have had a change in personal circumstance, making it much more inclusive.

“We are delighted to be able to offer this at Mount Wise as, although mortgages are becoming slightly easier to come by, finding the necessary deposit is often a huge hurdle for potential homebuyers to overcome.

“With prices starting at £120,000 (for a one bedroom apartment with allocated parking) it means a deposit of £6,000 is needed, rather than the 15% or £18,000 for which many lenders will ask. We have 15 homes available through this scheme allocated on a mix of one, two and three bedroom houses and apartments. We have already received a lot of interest about the scheme and now that we have been able to publicly declare our allocation, we look forward to hearing from those who are interested in qualifying.”

Sue Dyer, sales manager at selling agent King Sturge, trading as Jones Lang LaSalle, added: “Mount Wise is a striking development which has continued to receive high levels of interest. FirstBuy is an incredibly popular scheme and with only 15 places available we do expect these to be snapped up pretty quickly. We recommend anyone who is interested to get in touch with the sales team on 01752 676633 as soon as possible.”

Mount Wise has planning consent for 469 homes, a 21 bedroom boutique hotel, cricket pavilion, bistro, data centre and office space, all of which is split over four phases.

The on-site sales centre is open seven days a week from 10am until 4pm and appointments are not necessary.

Notes to Editors:

* Scheme terms and conditions apply

Mount Wise

The Mount Wise site covers 28 acres and is located less than a mile from Plymouth’s city centre.

The scheme has planning permission for 469 homes, a 21 bedroom hotel, 32,000 sq ft of offices, a 4,500 sq ft convenience store, a cricket pavilion and a 50,000 sq ft data storage centre.

The launch weekend took place in September 2010 and saw more than 3000 visitors. Work on the first phase also commenced in September 2010 and the first show home opened up to the public on Saturday 7th May.

FirstBuy

A £250 million scheme to help first-time buyers who want to buy a new-build property but can’t afford the high deposits has been launched.

Under the FirstBuy scheme, the government and the housebuilders will jointly provide a 20 per cent loan to top up first-time buyers’ own deposit of 5 per cent. This will allow them to take out a mortgage for 75 per cent of the property.

Loans will be free of charge for the first five years and repaid when the property is resold. The funds will then be recycled to fund more homes for the scheme.

The First Buy scheme should help 10,000 families to get onto the housing ladder for the first time, with the first homes expected to be available from September 2011.

This Friday evening (14th October) more than one million people are expected to see Grade II listed Admiralty House, Mount Wise, on their television screens – although they may not recognise it as one of Plymouth’s most historic buildings…

Some of the UK’s top comedic actors and actresses, with an entourage of make up artists and camera crews, took over Admiralty House in June and transformed it into iconic 10 Downing Street.

The stairwell was decorated with pictures of previous Prime Ministers and the drawing room set up to create a formal office, all for the filming of Channel 4′s 50s style ‘fugitive’ film noir spoof – The Hunt for Tony Blair.

The Comic Strip team reformed for this one off 60 minute film, which boasts a host of stars including: Robbie Coltrane; Nigel Planer; Jennifer Saunders; Harry Enfield; Rik Mayall; Stephen Mangan; Morgana Robinson and John Sessions.

Prime Minister Tony Blair (Stephen Mangan) is wanted for murder and on the run. He escapes from Number 10 and vows to clear his name no matter what the consequences.

Hot on his tail is Inspector Hutton (Robbie Coltrane), with his sidekick (James Buckley). The chase unfolds thanks to evidence gleaned from his ‘allies’ Mandelson (Nigel Planer) and Brown (Ford Kiernan), as well as an unlikely encounter with Margaret Thatcher (Jennifer Saunders).

Alistair Campbell is played by Harry Enfield and Rik Mayall is Professor Predictor.

Richard Keen, development advisor at Mount Wise, said: “Mount Wise was buzzing with activity and excitement throughout the filming. The cast was on site for several days, although the crew arrived earlier to set up and dress the building.

“Admiralty House managed to truly capture the imagination of the producers, an effect it has on many who visit. Hosting this filming really demonstrates the uniqueness of Mount Wise – there are certainly very few places which could be set up to represent 10 Downing Street!”

The Hunt for Tony Blair will be aired on Channel 4 at 9pm on Friday 14th October.

Mount Wise, Plymouth’s ‘Village by the Sea’, has been named as one of the select new developments to offer the coveted government backed FirstBuy scheme.

The Mount Wise site covers 28 acres and is located less than a mile from Plymouth’s city centre.
